What is open access?
The open access (OA) publishing model allows readers to access scholarly publications (like research articles, book chapters, and editorials) at no cost, unlike traditional models that require readers to pay to access scholarly publications.
Who pays?
Usually, the authors are required to pay fees, such as article processing charges (APCs), to publish their work in open access. Publishing costs vary by vendor and journal. Costs can range from a few hundred to thousands of dollars.
What is the benefit to authors?
Publishing open access increases the visibility and accessibility of the work, and therefore increases the likelihood that the work will be cited in other scholarly publications.
Cleveland Clinic Akron General is a member of the OhioLINK/NEOMED Consortia. OhioLINK has negotiated five publishing agreements for its institutions’ authors. These agreements allow authors to publish open access at no cost to the authors or additional cost to their institutions. A summary of these agreements can be found here: Summary of OhioLINK’s Open Access Publishing Agreements.
Caregivers can also take advantage of open access information and benefits through the Cleveland Clinic Main Campus Library. Information can be found at their website: Writing and Publishing: Read and Publish/Open Access Agreements.

Note that each agreement is unique and may have differing requirements and associated processes. Be sure to review the agreement for the specific journal of interest (below) for information regarding agreement dates, author eligibility, participating journals, limits to the number of articles that can be published open access, and eligible article types. Additional stipulations vary by publisher.
