What does a magnet do when placed over an ICD or Pacemaker?
A provider will place the magnet.
When a magnet is placed over an ICD - Will temporarily deactivate defibrillation. Shock therapy capabilities will resume once the battery is removed.
*Indications:
* A provider will apply the magnet should the ICD deliver inappropriate shock therapy except for VT/VF. If a ventricular arrhythmia should occur, the device will not deliver therapy until the magnet is removed.
* During certain cardiac surgeries.
Once removed, shock therapy will resume.
When a magnet is placed over a pacemaker - This will place the pacemaker in asynchronous mode. Single chamber will typically pace at VOO or AOO. For dual chamber it will pace in DOO mode. Depending on the pacemaker manufacturer and age of the device, this will sometimes speed up the pacing rate to 100 bpm. Other manufactures rate will be 85 or 65 bpm.
A magnet shall not be applied if the patients intrinsic heart rate is equal to or greater than the magnet rate. Once the magnet is removed, it will resume at the previous rate.
*Indications:
* Inappropriate pacing or pacemaker malfunction.
* Electrocautery
The LIP should always use caution when using this device.
